Friday reflection – on the losing end – 10/03/25

I hope everyone is doing okay. My boss wanted to join the sponsor and myself on our call ☎️ this morning. He got a rude awakening, but I ask myself if the program team really knows what they are supposed to do? It seemed the sponsor is fed up with all of us. She knows I don’t lack understanding, but do need guidance as I’m still fairly new to this project. She did tell us the rest have been on this project for at least 3 years. My boss got to see and hear the sponsor’s frustration and the conversations I have with her is always follow ups because she hadn’t heard from the program team.

The sponsor is straightforward, no games, no nonsense and I don’t take any of it personal. She took me under her wing and I am grateful ☺️ because I have learned so much from her to discern things on my own and have done a lot of reading to follow the rules and support the several initiatives with compliance. The sponsor expressed her concerns to my boss that the program team doesn’t know what they are doing and going on. She doesn’t believe there is any project management happening or any tracking on paused projects, ongoing, and new. There are new projects starting when the paused haven’t been completed and they can’t tell at what stage each one is going through phases or completed. ☑️ No solution has been reached or found. I’m now going to have to keep an eye 👁️ on things as I was directed to get involved in meetings. It’s concerning that between the program team no one can figure it out.

On the finance side I didn’t keep track of my notes and I hope she didn’t notice. I asked again as part of clarity for myself of our new reporting structure and what I should submit. I’m okay asking questions as long as I get it right! We got to the main topic of our meeting of can we transfer funds from one initiative to another and what those restrictions are. Specifically a situation that arose between an internal MD and an MD from a different institution. It was so embarrassing 🙈 for me to ask the same question and I already knew the answer. No, we don’t have a fully executed contract and two we have to show the need that the initiative will need in order to meet its obligations and its too early with nothing to show. My boss and administrator didn’t believe me and “VLA” as I’ll call her pretty much repeated what I had already expressed to the administrator. There you go, ripped us a new one. 😑

Finally we discussed two new initiatives, guidance, and budget. My boss now knows I am doing way more than my role requires. He tried to help during the call and just gave up. He was completely lost. Welcome to my world. 🌎 All the Best!
